If you were to travel west from Candelaria, you'd meet SR360. Four miles north of the intersection lies Belleville. If it weren't for Candelaria, you'd be tempted to pass this area, instead continuing north to Rhodes and Sodaville on US95. There's not much left of Belleville...not much at all. But it wasn't always like this. According to a nearby historical marker, Belleville was famous for murders, drunken brawls and practical jokes. At its peak around 1882, it had two hotels, restaurants, doctor, blacksmith, assay office, telegraph station and seven saloons. When water was finally available in nearby Candelaria, Belleville's inferior ores caused the town to decline. The miners flocked to Candelaria now that the threat of silicosis there was much reduced once the waterless stampmill was replaced with a water model greatly limiting the corrosive silica dust.
